Class Description
Report and Proposal Writing
The everchanging nature of the workplace requires City government writers to adapt to
divergent readers’ interests within and beyond their agency. Summarizing big issues has
become more important than ever. Yet staff must also supply focused, complete, and
organized content to ensure their reports and proposals remain living documents in their
absence and throughout the history of the issues they cover.
Report and Proposal Writing provides techniques for jumpstarting the writing process quickly.
The course leader offers useful templates for 26 writing situations for immediate use to ensure
comprehensive and organized reporting during the workshop and for easy adaptation
and development long after the course. You will learn about three types of work-related
reporting: descriptive (e.g., procedures, disciplinary memos, incident reports), analytical
(e.g., root cause, audit, status reports), and persuasive (proposals, justifications, business
plans)—with a practical strategy for writing each. You will also practice editing on relevant
paragraphs and sentences to cultivate your goal of crafting clear, concise reports and
proposals.
Objectives:
Attending this workshop will enable learners to write with ESP:
• Efficiency – writing work-related reports quickly
• Sufficiency – writing cohesively to support the purpose of the report
• Proficiency – writing skillfully with clarity, conciseness, and correctness
Target Audience: Staff who write technical reports and proposals for internal and external
Audiences
