Class Description

Media preparation is a critical element of any strategic communications strategy. But conducting an interview can be intimidating. This session will teach the techniques required to ensure spokespeople – including you – are prepared to represent your organization appropriately and accurately for planned and unplanned interviews. The skills are relevant in any communications situation where you need to get your point across and potentially deal with challenging questions, such as a presentation or pitch meeting.

Objectives:

  •  Presentation of the media landscape (traditional and non-traditional); news value; what makes an expert; interview types, styles, and techniques; and interview guidelines.
    • Key message development and delivery to communicate with clarity and create memorable connections with audiences.
    • Lessons learned: examples of good and botched interviews.
    • Physical and vocal presence: body language, gestures, posture + tone, pacing, filler words, etc. to portray authority and confidence.
    • Mock interviews with up to six volunteer participants in a variety of scenarios, practicing key messages, on- and off-camera; live analysis of performance.

Target Audience: Designated spokespeople or anyone whose role requires them to communicate on behalf of their agency
