Class Description

“You already have what you need, and together we will find it.”

Imagine MI as a coach who helps a player discover their own strengths and motivations, rather than simply dictating what they should do. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative approach designed to help individuals find their own internal motivation to make positive behavioral changes.

This workshop will familiarize you with the theoretical framework, and key skills of Motivational Interviewing through demonstrations and skill practice. You will discuss the research surrounding and supporting the method, will view and assess demonstrations of the approach, and will have opportunities to participate in conversations in which Motivational Interviewing is used. You will leave this training having a better understanding of how to have a powerful strength-based conversation with clients and staff that allows them to build their autonomy.

Overall Goal: Participants will be introduced to the spirit and micro skills of Motivational Interviewing.

Objectives:

  • Define and explain the four key elements of the MI spirit: Acceptance, Partnership, Compassion and Evocation
  • Describe several core concepts of Motivational Interviewing.
  • Demonstrate the various micro skills of Motivational Interviewing.
  • Evaluate the use of Motivational Interviewing skills in conversation and provide constructive feedback
  • Practice techniques to actively demonstrate the MI spirit in conversations.
  • Identify opportunities to apply acceptance, partnership, compassion, and evocation in various situations.
  • Debunk the myth of the "unmotivated client or staff" and explore how to navigate ambivalence

Target Audience: Helping professionals at all levels including, but not limited to, mental health counselors, social workers, client facing professionals, managers, and supervisors.
