Class Description
In every city government agency, leaders face the challenge of managing employees whose behaviors, attitudes, or performance can disrupt teamwork and hinder progress. This interactive course equips leaders with practical tools to effectively manage difficult employees and address workplace conflict in ways that strengthen, rather than divide, the organization.
Participants will learn how to identify the root causes of challenging behavior, apply proven communication and coaching techniques, and use conflict resolution strategies that promote understanding, accountability, and collaboration. By the end of the course, leaders will be better prepared to transform conflict into opportunity—building a more respectful, motivated, and high-performing team that drives the agency’s mission forward.
Objectives:
- Identify common causes and patterns of difficult employee behavior in the public-sector workplace.
- Apply effective communication and active listening techniques to de-escalate tense situations.
- Use conflict resolution strategies to address performance issues and interpersonal disagreements constructively.
- Develop individualized approaches for coaching and supporting employees toward improved behavior and performance.
- Understand the importance of consistency, fairness, and documentation in addressing employee challenges.
- Foster a culture of accountability, respect, and collaboration within their teams.
- Demonstrate leadership behaviors that turn conflict into an opportunity for growth and agency advancement.
Target Audience: Supervisors, Managers, and Leaders
