AI is a hot topic from the news, to our kitchen tables. It's also a topic that many of you have heard about in your work in city government. While city agencies have used AI for years, there is greater interest in making use of AI systems in light of the technology’s rapid development—to make our government’s work more efficient, effective, and responsive to New Yorkers’ needs.
In this session of the NYC AI Speaker Series Dr. Alondra Nelson, the Harold F. Linder Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, addresses the special responsibilities governments have when developing, procuring, and using AI systems and the opportunities that good governance presents for innovation. Dr. Nelson is a leading expert on responsible use of AI, and led the development of the Biden White House Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights. This is a recording of a live webinar event held on November 21, 2025.
Training Modules
There are 2 modules in this training:
- Module 1: Introduces the NYC AI Speaker series, as well as the guest speaker, Dr. Alondra Nelson. You will then watch Dr. Nelson’s talk delivered to New York City workers about the special responsibilities, risks, and opportunities of AI in the public sector.
- Module 2: Demonstrates how AI governance concepts apply in practice through discussion of real government concerns such as bias, guardrails, workforce impact, and public trust, followed by closing remarks.
About the Series
This webinar is the second installment in OTI’s NYC AI Expert Speaker Series. In the months ahead we’ll offer talks from experts from other governments, academia, industry, and civil society on a wide range of AI topics—from practical AI applications for government, to legal and ethical considerations, to what’s coming down the pike in this rapidly developing area.
